Preference Points for Veteran Spouses and Parents

If you are the spouse or parent of a qualifying veteran, you may be eligible to receive Veterans Preference Points that will be applied to your State of Illinois application score. This applies to:

  • The present spouse of a veteran with a service-connected disability that prevents the veteran from qualifying for state government employment
  • The surviving, non-remarried spouse of a veteran whose death was service-connected
  • One parent of an unmarried veteran who suffered a service-connected death or a service-connected disability that prevents the veteran from qualifying for state government employment
Important: If the veteran has already claimed veterans status for state employment preference or is currently working for the State of Illinois, no additional points can be granted to the veteran’s spouse or parent.
